I have just finished a rather special task which involved setting up a video surveillance system in a container park. The installation process was rather simple, nothing special about this part, but I was actually quite surprised to see how many different uses there was for a container. Normally a container is something we store things in, or use to transport things in. The most common type that I know, is the one we use when renovating our homes, to transport and get rid of all the trash leftover matarials in. But there was actually quite a lot of different models and uses in this park. Let’s take a quick look at some of the special container units, they had in the park. At least I thought they were special enough for me to write about. Here at DTV Transition you can see some examples of a those special container units.
Pavillon – the storage container
The pavillon is a special container, to store things in or to use as some additional space. Some of the pavillons was used for storing the largest pieces of equipment, other of the pavillon units was used as a conference room, where the daily meetings took place. These containers was often two or three times as wide as the normal ones. Some of them even had windows installed or make them appear like a small appartment. Nothing I would live in for a long time, but as a short term solution, they were rather fancy. The company Nyt Tag had quite a bit of these units in their park.
Mobile Kitchen – Keeping the work force fed
Another of the more interesting container types was the mobile kitchen, or mobilkøkken as they called it. It’s simply a kitchen that can be put on a truck and transported to whereever it is needed. The mobilekitchen got all that you could thing of when it comes to cooking. A kitchen facility that can provide food for over 400 people at one serving. Just plugin electricity and water and you are up and running in ten minutes. Quite a brilliant use of a container if you ask me. This one was the unit I liked the best, and not just because I love food.
Skurvogn – a place to sleep
In a big construction project like this you need a place to rest and sometimes to sleep. Many of the workers has a long way to home, so they often work there 4-5 days in a row, then drive home take a few days of, before returning to work. For many of those people it would be to expensive to rent a hotel room or something similar, so having the chance to rest and sleep in a container is golden. Once again a special unit, that is larger than the normal containers.
The good part about these skurvogn units, is that they can be placed on top of each other. Some of the ones I saw, was 3 stores heigh, which is a great way to save some room when ground space is a bit limited.
These three was just a few examples, there was a lot more containers there, both normal ones for storing equiment and trash bins, but also special ones like the ones above, and other units such as bathroom, toilet and many more. Setting up the video surveillance didn’t take much time, but giving me the grand tour around the contain park took almost as long. It was an interesting expenrience for me, and one of the reasons why I love this job, not two jobs are identical, and i’ll bet it will take quite some time, before I have to setup a video camera in a mobil kitchen.
